Overview

"...an authoritative sourcebook...for countries ranging from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Scores include the original language and, where necessary, a transliterated phonetic version. English translations are placed within the music where possible."--Music Educators Journal. "The most current and complete reference available. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries."--Reference Books Bulletin. Whether you're looking for a particular national anthem for a special occasion (to honor a guest from Uzbekistan, for example), or just have an interest in music and culture, this is the definitive book on the subject. It includes anthems for 195 nations, with the words in the original language, arranged alphabetically, and translated too.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A standard title in public libraries since 1960 and the only one in English gathering so many national anthems in print, this edition was released to incorporate several changes since the previous one in 1997, e.g., Cape Verde, Micronesia, Qatar, and Swaziland have adopted new anthems. Longtime editors Reed and Bristow cover 195 songs and for each include piano scores and, when available, texts. To help English-speaking readers learn the anthems, they have phonetically transliterated languages in scripts other than Roman as well as translated the original lyrics in a straightforward style. In a few cases, these are missing, so learning the anthems can only be done by ear. A select, updated "List of National Days" ends the book, with one or more holidays indicated for each country. Presumably, these are occasions for the national anthem to be sung, though Thanksgiving Day is listed for the United States. The editors have arranged some of the scores, while others are official versions. Some web sites contain MIDI files of national anthems with transliterated texts and some English translations, but they don't offer scores or the date of adoption. This reviewer checked one site and found different texts for Afghanistan's anthem from the one used here (which is defined as having been adopted in 1978 but since replaced by an "unobtainable" anthem). Because the editors work closely with embassies, high commissions, and governments, it is probably best to rely on their information. Update if appropriate. Libraries serving middle and high school students should especially consider.-Bonnie Jo Dopp, Univ. of Maryland Libs., College Park
