Overview

Introduced in 1977 and completely revised in 1994, these bestselling photographic field guides have become the birding bibles of more than four million enthusiasts. Virtually every bird found in North America is brought to life in a full-color photograph and with textual information on the bird's voice, nesting habits, habitat, range, and interesting behaviors. Accompanying range maps; overhead flight silhouettes; sections on bird-watching, accidental species, and endangered birds make these the most comprehensive field guides to birds available.

Note: the Eastern Edition generally covers states east of the Rocky Mountains, while the Western Edition covers the Rocky Mountain range and all the states to the west of it.

Since their first publication 16 years ago, the Field Guides to Birds East and West have sold over 3 million copies. Now, these two perennial favorites are published in completely updated editions--each with nearly 700 all-new, full-color photographs. 200,000 print (East) and 1,500,000 print (West). (Nature)

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
The newly-revised edition of this classic Eastern bird species field guide (first, 1977) uses clearer, more accurate color photography than the 1977 edition to depict 508 species (keyed to 646 photographs). The descriptive portion of the text is arranged by species rather than by habitat. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

A 'must have' for the enthusiast

These Audobon Society guides are such good books. I have the Eastern and Western bird guides, and love them. Believe me, I've looked at just about every bird guide on the market, and I think these are the best. Beautiful photographs, informative text, and an ingenius system of color-coding so you can find that bird you saw with minimal effort. Also, the heavy cover resists tearing and wrinkling, so these books will last and can be used in the field for years to come. You've just gotta have one!

    A Superb Book to Own

This is really a superb book to buy. It is lacking in that the text and the photographs are separate but if you look through the book a couple of times it really won't make a difference. It still has superb photos and detailed text. A must buy for any novice or experienced birder

    Feathered nature at its best

Anyone living on the Eastern area of the U.S. should get this book to learn about the nature around them. Good pictures and information provided.

As stated ... a great field guide for bird watching

I live in the western US and really enjoy, camping, hiking, observation of wildlife, including birds. Binoculars are a great tool. "The Field Guide to Birds," by the National Audubon Society, answers my curiosity in helping to accurately identify the species I observe.

For the novice, it is difficult to distinguish subtle difference between species from a pair of photographs that may not even show an entire bird. The discriptions of the various species are helpful, adding additional insight. In the process of looking for an answer to a single question, the result is always the addition of greater learning and a wider range of information that I had originally sought.

The binding and cover makes the book much more durable for travel and outdoor use.
