Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
This fun and inspiring third edition of the study guide for the National Geographic Bee should be in the classroom of all students from fourth to eighth grade. It has long been known that American students (and adults) are deficient in their geographic knowledge. In an ever changing political world, "understanding people and environments" has never been more important. Creating enthusiasm for the subject of geography is up to parents and teachers, and participating in the National Bee is one way schools can do it. The 2007 winner of the Bee begins with an enthusiastic introduction about what participating has meant to her. The following six chapters define geography beyond just a description of places, list the requirements for schools and individuals to participate in the Bee, provide study tips and clues for understanding the questions with plenty of examples, provide tips from previous winners, and list and explain resources valuable for acquiring knowledge. The tone is upbeat and encouraging. All that is needed is an adult to take the lead. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
