Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
With a foreword by Andrew Wojtanik, the 2004 winner of the National Geographic Bee, readers are introduced to a love for the world of geography. Although the book is intended to be a study guide for participation in the national contest that boasts a $25,000 scholarship, it also introduces the reader to the world at large. The small book is filled with charts, maps and diagrams. The tips section presents ideas on how to prepare for the contest that can easily be applied to any testing situation. Activities that help the reader to understand the physical, political, and environmental issues are included. Questions and answers from past contests are included plus twenty-two pages of supplemental resources. This 126-page book is packed with great information for classroom use. Teachers can adapt the contest format to a classroom format and make use of all of this information. This paperback should be in all middle school social studies classrooms. 2005, National Geographic Publishers, and Ages 8 to 14.

School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-This title is designed to help avid geography students, along with teachers and parents, prepare for the National Geographic Bee. The introduction contains an excellent discussion of the importance of geographical knowledge, and the following chapters provide tips on how and what to study, and how to look for clues in the questions themselves. The text also includes questions used in previous bees to give contestants a general idea of what to expect and explains the format of the competition at the local, state, and national levels. Cunha concludes with a detailed description of some of the many volumes that will serve as resources. The text, written in second person, is quite readable. The content is a combination of information and advice for aspiring contestants. Monochromatic maps, charts, graphs, and photos appear throughout. While this title is not an essential purchase, it could easily be a catalyst for those students who need an extra challenge.-Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    Bee Champ says its OK

I am a two time winner of my schools Geography Bee (2002, 2003). This Year, I used this book to help me study. While I did win, I felt that this book only had so much potential in terms of questions. Also, the real questions are much harder. It would be good to buy this book, but dont use it as your only means of study.
