Overview

The last decade has seen an explosion of innovative and sophisticated digital mapping technologies—and National Geographic has been at the forefront of developing these powerful new tools to create the finest, most functional and informative atlases available anywhere.

This compact, easy-to-use format is the first product built on our newly developed, cutting-edge cartographic database. It offers the convenience of smaller scale without sacrificing clarity or detail; instead, identically-scaled maps on a given continent enable readers to compare physical, political, and regional information simply and accurately.

After a fascinating explanation of the latest technology, the atlas examines our world as a whole, presenting 25 global themes, from tectonics, the biosphere, and energy sources to population, health, literacy, and more, along with such timely topics as environmental stress and flash points for conflict and terror. Next it explores each continent with special spreads assessing the global economic impact of each. The oceans and the polar regions follow providing complete, consistent coverage. Finally, comprehensive appendices present world political information, statistics, and geographic comparisons organized for quick and easy reference.

In addition, access to a companion web site will provide continuing and complimentary information making this Atlas truly state-of-the-art and up-to-the-minute.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
National Geographic has produced a conveniently sized reduced desktop reference version of its renowned full-size world atlas. It features more than 250 full-color maps as well as photographs and satellite images. More than 70 world thematic maps explore such topics as geomorphology, climate, biodiversity, human population, energy, and environment. Each continent and the United States are introduced by physical and political maps, followed by 12 additional thematic maps covering the natural, human, and economic worlds and regional political maps with detailed topographical modeling. Many of these regional maps are double-page, and some content is lost in the gutter between them. The independence of Montenegro from Serbia in June 2006 is reflected in the Western Balkans map (though not elsewhere) a remarkable achievement with printing of the atlas already underway. Unrecognized de facto or contested states such as Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Northern Cyprus, Somaliland, South Ossetia, Transdniestria, and Western Sahara are grayed and labeled with text describing their status. Regrettably, the gazetteer section of the full-size atlas has been replaced by "world facts" tables with 27 categories in very fine print. The index of 55,000 place names is also in the same fine print. Bottom Line Although The DK World Reference Atlas remains this reviewer's favorite, it cannot be compared with this one as there has apparently been no updated edition of this country-by-country ready-reference gem in gazetteer format since 1996. The National Geographic atlas is recommended for all reference collections as the most current and convenient desktop geographical resource. Edward K. Werner, St. Lucie Cty. Lib. Syst., Ft. great textbook

I had to get this book for a geography class that i was takeing online. the teacher requested this book specifically, so i had to buy it. But then i saw why, the full color and page maps are very descriptive and show the world in a great way. it breaks the world down my regions and then with more maps shows different information about the specific countries. i had to write a county report with only using this book and i was able to write 4 pages just on the information i found in this atlas.
