National Geographic: Destination Appalachia

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Zac Johnson
Another in National Geographic's far-reaching Destination series, Destination Appalachia seems a lot closer than some of their exotic destinations, but the region is no less exotic and culturally enriching than their journeys to Spain and Africa. The CD comes complete with intriguing cultural facts and maps of each region included in the enclosed foldout. The album's subtitle, Bluegrass, Banjos & Smoky Mountain Tales, gives little insight as to what is contained within -- mostly contemporary bluegrass artists like Ricky Scaggs and Tony Rice with a handful of classic bluegrass artists like the Osborne Brothers and the Bluegrass Cardinals. While this is a fine (even excellent) collection of newer bluegrass music, the assumption from the title and the cover photo is that it will be chock-full of old-time gritty field recordings from the likes of Roscoe Holcomb and Buell Kazee. The album on the whole is a cleanly recorded, well-planned, studio-produced collection of traditional folk songs, but part of what makes true traditional Appalachian folk so electrifying is the way it creaks and groans through the bones and souls of the players, as is demonstrated almost exclusively on the CD by rough fiddler Art Stamper's "Brushy Fork of John's Creek." Although performers like progressive bluegrass artist and Harvard graduate Alison Brown don't necessarily embody the age-old old-timey feel, the music she interprets is undoubtedly rooted in the mountains.
