Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan R. Shaffner
Brian Skerry has a job that thousands of people envy—he is a photographer for National Geographic. Focusing on sea animals, this book has four sections of three chapters each. In Trinidad, Skerry both photographs newly hatched leatherback turtles and helps untangle a leatherback from a fishing net. He then travels to Indonesia’s clearer waters to photograph leatherbacks but is frustrated by the lack of turtles, leading to his suggestions to help the decreasing leatherback population. Skerry next photographs baby harp seals in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Born yellow, they change to white for the twelve days they live on the ice, then turn spotted like the parent who has just abandoned them. While on this story, Skerry was rescued by the Canadian Coast Guard when his boat was in danger of being crushed by sea ice during a blizzard. The third story tells of swimming with a friendly beluga whale, Wilma, in Chedabucto Bay, Nova Scotia. Skerry’s friend Jim had trained Wilma to come when she heard rocks being pounded together underwater. The final section tells about the sharks off Rhode Island and the Line Islands. Skerry shares coral reef experiences and how he escaped from being stranded on Starbuck Island while photographing seabirds. Written in short sentences, the text is a bit choppy with many incomplete sentences. Reluctant readers, adventurous kids, and animal lovers may enjoy Skerry’s book, and teachers may use it to check comprehension. Maps that could have added much to the comprehension were nonexistent. Reviewer: Susan R. Shaffner; Ages 6 to 10.
