Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This fun nonfiction picture book allows students to dig into the history of ancient Egypt in an exceptionally upper-elementary/middle friendly way. The authors have been very smart in choosing topics that middle grade students would be interested in and then presenting it with phenomenal illustrations against bright backgrounds that beg for the reader's attention. Maps, pictures, and diagrams provide the widest possible view of Egyptian life and catchy section titles like "Treasure! Murder! A Mummy's Curse!" will certain draw younger reader's attention. A section towards the end of the text provides activities to test reader's imaginations and understanding of what they have read thus far: from making one's own cartouche based on the hieroglyphs to creating an Egyptian board game provide an interesting and fun challenge. Another section focuses on myths versus facts concerning Egypt; my favorite concerned the Sphinx's "nose job." There is also a nice section about why Egyptian artifacts must be protected and how everyone can support that. An interactive glossary that defines terms in use throughout the text then gives students a multiple choice question that asks them to take this information and answer a related question. This is an excellent addition for school or home libraries. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
