Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristi Bernard
Puppies, pooches, canines, and wolves can all be placed into pretty much everyone's favorite animal category. Dogs are quite simply a wonderful animal. They are cute, cuddly, furry, and smart. National Geographic shares with readers of all ages what we may or may not know about these loveable creatures. Dogs love unconditionally. Whether you are happy or sad they stand loyally by your side. In case you were wondering what a dog is the definition may not be what you think. According to this guide the term "dog" is a generic term for a whole family of animals called Canidae. Dogs are the result of thousands of years of breeding from the gray wolf. Since then they have become domesticated and are now found in over 350 to 400 varied breeds. Some favorite big dogs are Labrador Retrievers, Boxes, German Shepherds, and the Bernese Mountain dog. Smaller dogs like the Jack Russell terrier, the Pug, Dachshund, and Toy Poodle are very distinctive in their own right. If you wonder why dogs bark, bury bones, or roll in smelly things the answers are here and they may surprise you. Pictures of dogs and their animal life with humans and each other are included along with facts and their history. Readers will enjoy learning about a dogs design, dogs and their jobs, and even famous dogs. The back of the book has an interactive dog glossary, books, movies, and websites where any reader can learn more. This wonderful book is informative, educational, fun and a great addition to any home or school library. Reviewer: Kristi Bernard
