Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisa Greenberg
Who knew that the shark strutted through the ocean like the "ultimate rock star of the sea"? Or that its sense of smell was so precise it could perceive blood a half mile away? Fabulous images from National Geographic researchers and photographers Jennifer Hayes and David Doublet, a zest for language and humor from writer Ruth Musgrave, a mass of fascinating facts about the secret lives of sharks, and descriptive graphics make this book a treasure of factoids for elementary school students. This book will be a wonderful addition to a class or school library and the perfect resource for science projects. Many of the pages set up a science mind-set. For example, a shark is contrasted with a goldfish to show the difference between bony and cartilage fish. Some pages appeal particularly to students who like numbers while others appeal to those who like definitions and new vocabulary. Kids who could care less about sharks are likely to enjoy perusing the pictures. They will likely learn something without even noticing! Reviewer: Lisa Greenberg
