Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Prepare to set out on grand pirate-y adventure with this Mad Lib-type offering from the National Geographic Society. Readers are invited to take a moment to review some essential elements of speech (noun, adjective, verb, adverb, silly word or exclamation) before getting started, then flip to any page, and quiz friends to provide the types of words specified for each blank. Next they will read the whole thing back, and laugh at the silly story that results from this cobbled, interactive approach to storytelling. True to the spirit of the National Geographic Society, there’s an educational component in this offering in the “Funny Fill-in” series; each story is accompanied by one or more fun facts, such as that “[an] octopus can have nearly 2,000 suckers on its tentacles” or that “[the] highest dunes in the Sahara are taller than the Empire State Building in New York City.” Readers will gladly sharpen their pencils or get ready to laugh—buccaneer bellows are welcome!—with this fun tool for shared storytelling. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green; Ages 6 to 10.
