Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan R. Shaffner
Did Vikings wear horned helmets? Do fingers wrinkle from absorbing water? Are left-handed people more creative? No, no, and no. Children’s science books have rarely been more entertaining than this one. Part of the “National Geographic Kids Myths Busted!” series and illustrated in a photographic collage style, Krieger busts each science myth in a three-step order: 1. Myth stated 2. Origin of myth. 3. Myth busted. Young readers will enjoy using the pictures to help read the myths, more advanced readers will enjoy learning science trivia to impress their parents and friends, and even adults may enjoy finding more things that they have been wrong about. Each section is no more than four pages making this an easy book to pick up and put down. The list of 2014 Atlantic hurricane names may soon cause the book to appear a bit dated, but people will always need to know that green snot does not necessarily mean you have an infection, that a tomato juice bath is not the best choice for skunky dogs, and that rubber tires will not protect you from lightning. Reviewer: Susan R. Shaffner; Ages 6 to 12.
