Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
Fortune cookies were not invented in China. And you can stop trying to tickle yourself, because your brain warns you of the sensation in advance. With pitch-perfect humor and an incredibly broad range of topics, this trivia book will capture the interest of young readers. The questions, predominantly structured in true/false and multiple choice formats, are grouped into eight categories: Animal Kingdom; What on Earth?; Pop Culture; Get Back to Nature; Blast from the Past; It All Adds Up!; Weird Science; and Global Adventures. Each category contains a series of two-page spreads with trivia questions on a subcategory, such as Map Mania. The table of contents lists the subcategories, but the topics may not be immediately clear because they are figurative, not literal. For example, "Hi, Honey, I'm Home!" is about bees. Brightly colored boxes keep each set of questions and answers organized visually, which is very important since the text is very small. Answers and scoring methods are in the back of the book, and are in even smaller type, which can make quickly checking facts a challenge. This may prompt readers to mark their answers in the book so they can check each section as a whole, which is not ideal for classroom or library use. While the book is entertaining enough to be read independently, it is usually more fun to share random facts with others or test their trivia skills. While in the car, families can challenge each other to a trivia showdown. Teachers can use the questions to introduce new topics of study or transition between topics. They could also incorporate the writing of trivia questions into units of study to stimulate student research. Reviewer: Keri Collins Lewis
