Overview

In the crowded field of dinosaur books, this is the very first to offer children ages 7 to 10—those at the height of their enthusiasm for the prehistoric giants—complete coverage of all the known dinosaurs.
Don Lessem, author of more than 60 books—most of them about dinosaurs—teams up with Franco Tempesta, a talented illustrator with a fresh and appealing style. The exciting result is an accessible, visually stunning book that’s packed with facts that kids can use to impress their friends and families.
The Ultimate Dinopedia is organized by the periods that are well known to young enthusiasts: Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. It includes almost every dinosaur ever discovered, and highlights 125 species that scientists know sufficiently to describe in rich detail. Special features include How We Know What They Looked Like, Baby Dinosaurs, Great Dinosaur Goofs, and much more. Every featured dino gets a fact box that delivers important information at a glance—Scientific Name, Discoverer, Place and Date of Discovery, Length, Habitat, Diet, Fossils, Fun Facts, and Range Map. This book provides—in fabulously illustrated, kid-friendly form—all the information an 8-year-old fact hound needs to lord that knowledge over parents and teachers!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Leis-Newman
Between the 160 pages dedicated to individual dinosaurs ranging from Eoraptor to Therizinosaurus and the large color illustrations, this is a book to thrill the young dinosaur lover. The opening chapters focus on the basics, such as myths about dinosaurs and the causes. It's the "dinopedia" section where Lessem displays his passion for their subjects, whether it's describing how Gastonia might have used its tail to fend off attackers, or how the Apatosaurus may have protected its young. Lessem writes in a concise factual way that is age appropriate but not condescending. As a long-time dinosaur author, he knows his subject profoundly. Tempesta's illustrations are compelling, with dinosaurs often looking straight at the reader, although there is plenty of predatory action that is not for the faint of heart. A dino dictionary in the back of the book makes for easy reference, and a recommended books, websites and videos section is extensive. Additional features include a glossary, an introduction by paleontologist Rodolfo Coria and a helpful "How To Use This Book" section. It would be an excellent addition for a library, or for an intense dinosaur lover. Reviewer: Elizabeth Leis-Newman

Awesome book for young dinosaur enthusiasts!

My 3-year old and I have enjoyed reading this book together. It has many dinosaurs that we had never heard of before. The illustrations are great, and the text is brief but interesting (perfect for young readers with short attention spans). I would highly recommend this book for any kids with an interest in dinosaurs.

Awesome reference book for future paleontologists

My kindergarten son is absolutely obsessed with dinosaurs. He picked this book out at the local library last summer and has repeatedly checked it out. He has learned a great deal from this book and it has also helped him ask many new questions. He often says, "Mom, did you know..." and most times I do not know the answer - but he already does and finds it in this book. I purchased it from Barnes & Noble for him for Christmas. Now he'll never have to return it to the library and he can always have an awesome dinosaur resource at hand.
