Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Brandon West
Who doesn't like to cool off on a hot day? This board book follows a baby elephant named Ella and her mother, as they attempt to beat the summer heat. Their efforts to stay cool include splashing around a pond, making a fan out of a tree branch, and going for a roll in the mud. As with most board books, the story is fairly simple and features short sentences and an easy vocabulary that provides an appropriate challenge for emergent readers. This edition features flaps that open to expose story elements and encourage interactivity with the text. In particular, making predictions is a reading strategy that works well with this book, given the lift-the-flap feature. The story features photographs of real elephants who exist in hand-drawn environments. As with most National Geographic Kids titles, this book blends nonfiction with a fictitious story, which can stimulate discussion about real elephants and their environments. Ella's Bath is a fun and engaging title worth adding to any child's bookshelf. Reviewer: Brandon West
