National Geographic Photographs Then and Nowby National Geographic
The intrigue of Then and Now is in the pictures, but it is also in the way the pictures and the words to take you on a journey through time and across continents, experiencing change in landscapes, in people, in the way we look at the world. Photographically, eight regions define the book: North America, Central and South America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Africa, Oceania, and the Poles. Beginning each chapter, a veteran National Geographic writer or photographer reveals in an essay his or her experiences covering that area over time, with anecdotes that show how the magazine has been sensitive to the changes in a place. Following the essay, each double-page section might be considered a puzzle of sorts. The images draw you in. The captions not only identify the images, but link them to reveal the "then" and "Now," sometimes dramatic, sometimes subtle; playful or heartrending. Finally, excerpts from National Geographic articles accompany some pictures, lending further insight into the changes in a place and how the magazine has recorded them always in tune with the times.
