Isbouts (humanities, Fielding Graduate Univ.; The Biblical World) has written an exquisite reference guide to the personalities in the Bible. More than 2,000 entries of varying lengths are organized across five chapters spanning Genesis to Revelation. Each chapter opens with a brief introduction describing the origin of the books and their stories with explanations of the politics, history, and institutions within those biblical texts. The second half contains an alphabetical dictionary of the men and women mentioned in the particular segment studied. Helpful features include the meaning of the person's name, if known, with a citation to the relevant text. Every chapter features magnificent color reproductions of works by artists such as Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Caravaggio; detailed and informative maps; and color photographs of objects, materials, and art unique to each biblical period. Genealogical trees and sidebars, too, cover a variety of topics: the binding of Isaac, Satan and Evil, Pharisees and Messiah, etc. Adding to its scholarly heft, Isbouts's work is backed by a board of noted biblical scholars and archaeologists. VERDICT The text is lavishly illustrated with art, photos, and maps that help situate the period and personalities under examination, a splendid presentation that sets it apart from similar works. Even if you own a comparable title, this well-researched and well-organized work will complement what is already on your shelf. For anyone interested in biblical studies, theology, and history, from general readers to seminary students. [See author Q&A, p. 140.]—Jacqueline Parascandola, Columbia Univ. Libs., New York
