Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joan Carris
Perhaps, if I'd grown up with a glorious, generous (13" x 10") atlas like this one, my geography would not now be so pitifully weak. Within these 175 pages is the world, laid out in a most logical, appealing manner. First, readers learn to read maps. Next, they consider our planet within the larger concept of space, followed by maps and cultural information for all 7 continents. Many pictures of people, not just places, bring each portion of each continent to vibrant life. Your home, school, and library all need this well-designed research tool.
Children's Literature - Mary Quattlebaum
Thumbing through this atlas is a wonderful way to begin any real or imaginary journey. Maps are found within, of course; but more importantly for young readers, this atlas includes sections on understanding them and the forces that shape the earth. Thematic maps about endangered species, world population, and the environment are especially interesting. Fact panels make it easy for youngsters to find information relating to a region's highest mountains, longest rivers, largest cities, and major products. Each country is profiled with its flag, population, capital, area, and language. The photographs are both sumptuous and substantial, and they provide intriguing glimpses of different people and cultures.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-6-This title replaces the National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our World (1994) as the best children's atlas for both browsing and reference use. Well designed for their target audience, the maps are mostly large, uncluttered, attractive, and easy to read. The introductory and explanatory material, key features in children's atlases, are well done. Stunning full-color photographs appear throughout. A first choice.-SD
