Overview

Mountains and water: the mountains, invariably volcanoes, andoften active; the water, lapping the shores of pine-clad islands, fanning out over rocks in narrow gorges, or lying placid in paddy fields reflecting the graceful summits of the mountains.

This is the landscape of many of Japan's twenty-eight national parks. Mount Fuji of course belongs to one, and the shrine of the Sun Goddess at Ise forms part of another, as do the serrated peaks of Japan's Alps and the geological wonders of her coastline.

But that's not all. Japan reaches as far north as Maine and further south than Florida, and this great climatic variety is reflected in her national parks. Hokkaido with its sub-arctic mountains and lakes has six parks, while the sub-tropical islands, complete with shimmering beaches and coral reefs, contribute a further two.

Travel writing has for centuries been regarded in Japan as a form of literature second to none. Dorothy Britton and Mary Sutherland carry on this literary tradition, presenting a picture of each park that is both relaxed and informative.

Almost a hundred color photographs complement the text, revealing the extraordinary range of the landscape--from the fierce reds and golds of autumn on the highlands, to the subtle shades of pink and green in the valleys in spring, to the pure white of mountain-top snow.

And as a background there are stories of the prowess of gods, the feats of endurance of Buddhist ascetics, and the legends associated with the names bestowed by the Japanese on their rivers, mountains, and islands.
