Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This nicely illustrated 32-page book introduces the young reader to the traditional cultures Native Americans along the Northwest Coast. It begins with a description of the productive coastal environment. Then the text covers the clans, moieties and phratries which organized village life. The authors next explain the role of salmon and of cedar trees in the subsistence and material culture of these people, as well as their houses, water craft, trade, and gift exchange ceremonies. Differences between the northern, central and southern regions of the coast are described. The last three chapters deal with the arrival of Europeans, the changes this wrought in Northwest Coast culture, and how these Native Americans live today. A short glossary, index and guide to Internet sites complete the book. The book is well written and full of good illustrations that help the reader imagine what life as a member of these complex and artistically prolific tribes was like. 2004, Crabtree Publishing Company, Ages 10 up.
