Native Alternatives to Invasive Plants

Overview

The biggest enemy of any garden is not a pest, disease, or poison—it’s any plant with tougher survival skills than the plants it competes with. The best way to weed out the invaders is with this fiendishly clever guide to native plants that can seek and destroy the top 100 most unwelcome perennials, grasses, vines, shrubs, and trees. While replacing the invaders, the beautiful, hardy native plants described here also attract native birds and butterflies, while turning away their own enemy invaders. ...

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This addition to the "Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guides" series recommends native plant species to use in gardens instead of invasive nonnative species that are a threat to native plants and animals. Burrell, a lifelong gardener, garden designer, and award-winning author, arranges his entries first by plant type (trees, shrubs, vines, herbaceous plants, and grasses), then alphabetically by the scientific name of the invasive species. Next he describes one to four alternative native species. Each entry includes scientific name, common name, native habitat and range, USDA hardiness zones, a description and ornamental uses of the plant, and growing tips. Entries may also include a paragraph listing related native plants or a web site for additional suggestions. Burrell has made every effort to match the desirable characteristics (flowers, fruit, form, fall color) of the alternative plant with the invasive one. An "Attributes at a Glance" box and small color photo round out each entry. Indexes include the federal list of invasive plants, an index of invasive plants, and an index of native plants. This concise, authoritative, and useful guide is recommended for public, academic, and horticultural libraries.-Sue O'Brien, Downers Grove P.L., IL Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
