Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for IF YOU LIVED IN COLONIAL TIMES
"Gives a great deal of information and is nicely appropriate to the capability of the beginning reader." -BULLETIN OF THE CENTER FOR CHILDREN'S BOOKS
Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This text, previously titled and published under the name The Defenders, tells the stories of three Native American chiefs, each of whom fought against American leadership who tried to take Native lands from the tribes each tried to defend. All three stories provide, essentially, the biography and experiences of each warrior, beginning with childhood influences and leading through to adulthood and their mostly negative interactions with the U.S. military. Each section is clearly researched and the language is student-friendly. Pictures throughout each chapter provide solid support for visual readers. This text would probably work well as teachers look for texts to support the Common Core Standards and the important focus on informational text. It would have been if this text had had a section on related texts or presented timelines for each leader that corresponded to the history of the Westward Migration of American settlers to more fully understand the impact on Native American groups in this country. That said, this is an appropriate compilation of biographies for elementary readers. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
