Editorial Reviews

KLIATT - Janet Julian
This book for YAs by a member of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe features ten Native Americans. Here are some of the lives celebrated: Chief Red Hawk is a spiritual leader, master storyteller, an award-winning musician, artist, poet and a published author. He is a Cherokee and the Chief and President of the United Cherokee Nation. He is also a Navy veteran who speaks often on racism and heritage. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell is the only Native American to serve in the US Senate. He was the team captain for the American judo competition at the 1964 Olympics. In his life he has been a judo champ, a teacher, a deputy, a Congressman, a Senator, and a Cheyenne Chief. Stanley Vollant is an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Ottawa. He is an Inuit from Eastern Canada, an expert in arthroscopic surgery who teaches other Native Canadian doctors. Lieutenant Mark Bowman, Choctaw, serves on the police force of Virginia Beach, Virginia. He is also a triathlon athlete who has competed in two Iron Man competitions. Vincent Schilling is also the author of Native Athletes in Action! He has interviewed each of his ten "heroes" and describes their sometimes difficult lives with honesty. These ten men will inspire not only Native Americans, but all readers. Reviewer: Janet Julian
