Overview

Monograph 6
This book results from almost four decades of research and practical experience with this
group of fishes. This work addresses the evolution, taxonomy, and present distributions of
members of this group of fishes (cutthroat, rainbow, Gila, and related indigenous trout of the
West), and proposes a conservation philosophy to sustain them.
This book contains: black and white drawings, color plates, a thorough bibliography, a
useful glossary of taxonomic and ecological terms, and an index. This book is intended for:
fisheries managers, students of salmonid evolution, taxonomists, and fishermen who want to
learn more about the trout they pursue.

Editorial Reviews

Copiea
: The work is well written, easy to read, well organized, and well structured and
should be required overview reading for anyone either personally or professionally interested in
native western trout history and management.
The Flyfisher
One of the important messages of Behnke's book is that messing around with
stocks of these various American trouts, introducing them here, there, everywhere, and mixing
them up in hatcheries and in the wild, may lead to hybridisation of stocks and loss of some of
their valuable genetic and adaptive characteristics. Behnke is a strong proponent of respecting
wild stocks and their high level of adaptation to their peculiar environments....in this book he
provides the rationale for his attitudes. (New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater
Research, 1993)
REVIW: If you care about the western fish you pursue -- their history in science and
management, their natural history and lore, and their prospects for the future -- you will
not likely find a better opportunity to learn about them than provided by this book....Bob
Behnke's book will serve as a springboard for what-ever direction taxonomy may take, and
should also be of great value to any fisherman who want to learn more about trout than is
available in the customary popular sources.
Transactions of the American Fisheries
It is an account of the diversity of western North American trout related to their
probable evolution and movements and to the effects of human activity, and it proposes
new attitudes to their exploitation and the management of these genetic resources. (Journal of
Fish Biology, April 1993)
REVIEW: Behnke's 35 years of experience in the study of western trouts is evident on
every page. Controversy and uncertainty regarding the western trouts will continue, but this
monograph will long be a primary reference for taxonomists, fisheries managers, and others
concerned with these special fishes.
