Editorial Reviews

Midwest Book Review
The decision to expand NATO eastward in Europe is a fateful venture that has received surprisingly little public attention or discussion. Advocates of enlargement insist that the step will foster cooperation, consolidate democracy, and promote stability. But the eighteen distinguished contributors to this volume conclude, for the most part, that an expanded NATO is a dubious, potentially disastrous idea, politically and militarily. Instead of healing the wounds of the Cold War, this expansion threatens to create a new division in Europe and undermine friendly relations with Russia. Even worse, it will establish expensive, dangerous, and probably unsustainable security obligations of the United States. NATO Enlargement: Illusions and Reality is a valuable and informative contribution to the on-going national dialogue of NATO policy and the appropriate American response.
