School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Part I of this expansive title covers the science behind natural disasters and the impact of human preparedness and response, and looks at historical events in the United States and abroad. The section concludes with information on risk assessment. Part II includes an eclectic collection of primary-source documents, ranging from a 1912 U.S. Deptartment of the Interior report on the New Madrid Earthquake to tsunami bulletins published by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center before the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunamis. Part III offers research tools such as an annotated bibliography, graphs and charts, a chronology, and a list of organizations and agencies. The book will serve as an excellent example for students as it is meticulously documented; it's very easy to trace Favor's sources, as most chapters conclude with pages and pages of endnotes. Although the book is well organized and the writing is clear and concise, its level of detail makes it most appropriate for serious, extensive research projects, most likely at the AP or IB levels.—Lindsay Cesari, Baldwinsville School District, NY
