Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"It spells out what you need to know to keep yourself in optimum health and to aviod the common debilitating diseases. Keep it handy, read it often." - Dean Ornish, M.D.

"Many regard this book as the bible of natural healing; but even those who are on the fence about alternative medicine should find it to be an entertaining, informative, and highly opinionated beginner's guide to achieving better health without conventional medicine." Amazon.com

"Emphasizing natural therapies that mobilize the body's own healing resources, Weil (U. of Arizona School of Medicine) provides a blueprint for low-cost, preventive health maintenance that is both a general guide on how to stay well and a reference manual to be consulted for specific symptoms. One of the best in a crowded field." Booknews, Inc.

Washington Post
Andrew Weil is an extraordinary phenomenon.
Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Weil, a believer in alternative, preventive medicine, provides basic fitness information and advises readers on herbal home remedies for common ailments. ``Although he is justifiably quick to call certain conditions--chronic fatigue syndrome, candidiasis, hypoglycemia--faddishly inflated in presumed severity and consequences . . . some of Weil's positions are controversial,'' said PW. (May)
Library Journal
Weil, a Harvard Medical School graduate and a member of the advisory panel for the Congressional Study of Alternative Cancer Therapies, advocates preventative health maintenance as a means of combating future painful and expensive therapies. The handbook proposes methods of creating a healthy lifestyle, offers advice on guarding against potentially fatal diseases, provides information on natural treatments, and recommends these treatments for specific common ailments. Controversial in its challenge of orthodox medicine, the manual stands out as a useful resource for its clear, concise writing style, its practical advice, and its thoughtful examination of the important issues facing contemporary health care. For consumer health collections.-- Marilyn Rosenthal, Nassau Community Coll. Lib., Garden City, N.Y.

A MUST HAVE IN EVERY HOME

Very comprehensive and open minded. I liked the level of detail in the first chapters that explained how different foods are metabolized. I found this book highly inspiring and a must to have and re-read. This book helped me solve a years-long bladder problem - Weil included written case studies of different people with the same problems than me (constant bladder infections, frequency and urgency, no pressure or dripping and sensitivity of the urinal tract). The major problem? Caffeine - even though I never drank more than one cup of coffee a day, I loved Coke and chocolate. Since I excluded caffeine (or at least greatly reduced it) I did not have any signs of a problem again. This book was written for me.

    Wellness Not Weightloss

If you are tired of prescriptions, fad diets and books focused only on weight loss, then Dr. Weil's approach in "Natural Health, Natural Medicine" will provide a useful second opinion. This book presents easy tips for living a healthier, more balanced life in a society that often depends on quick fix remedies. It's a handbook for readers interested in robust health. Dr. Weil approaches "Natural Health" as a well-rounded state of being instead of limiting his discussion of wellness to exercises and diets that will shed unwanted pounds. The "Natural Medicine" chapters provide alternative treatments to prescriptions and over the counter remedies.

    Dr. Weil's Practical Advice

Anyone who has ever read Andy Weil's books knows he has a very conversational writing style. It's delightful to read. I bought this book originally in the late 80's, early 90's. He wants you to know about self-care and less toxic remedies. I have found this book very helpful and still rely on it. I bought this latest printing for my brother.
