Overview

Arkes (Amherst College) has published many books on moral philosophy and constitutional law. Here he argues that in the past 35 years many Americans—in particular, members of the political class—have talked themselves out of the "natural rights" which were the basis of the teaching of the American founders and Abraham Lincoln. Believing that current claims of liberty are all connected to the notion of sexual freedom, Arkes argues that the right to choose an abortion relies on a logic which leads to detachment from the logic of natural rights, and ultimately a lack of moral justification for any rights.
