The 20th century has seen numerous critiques of metaphysics rooted either in the scientific- technological project, in the historization of man, or in modern forms of enlightenment. The theme of these 19 philosophical essays, however, is that nature can no longer simply serve man and that metaphysical reflection has moved beyond its critics and become a necessity. Based on English, French, American, and German philosophy, the articles touch upon such subjects as nature as a symbol of identity, evolutionary epistemology, Kant's critique of judgment, and environmental ethics.
