Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It is always a nice surprise to see a new craft book that has some innovative new projects for young children. This is not easily accomplished because so many great craft books have been published. This edition is well designed with large photographs of each finished project. Numerous variations on each theme support the books basic premise of encouraging creativity. There is no one "right way" to make these crafts. The supplies for each project are illustrated with photographs, making it a lot easier for the kids to follow along on their own. However there are activities that do require adult supervision. The most unusual project in this book is making wall hangings by hammering the color out of flowers. The flower or leaf is taped to the fabric; it is then turned over and gently hammered to release the pigments in the plant. These colors are not washable, but evidently the fern's color is more permanent and can be used on a T-shirt. There are a number of interesting suggestions for ways to display leaf rubbings and using leaves for stencils for water color painting. Tiles can be make out of air-dry clay and imbedded with shells, pebbles and flowers. These activities are well thought out and beautifully presented. 2002, North Light Books,

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Williams begins with a note to adults about collecting natural materials with children and sparking creativity. Additional introductory text encourages care in preparation of the work space; has a reminder about safety; and lists possible natural materials as well as glues, papers, clays, and paints. The 16 projects range in difficulty from making bookmarks with pressed leaves and petals to fashioning candleholders, keepsake pillows, and treasure dishes. Each item is carefully presented with color photographs both of the supplies needed and of the steps in the production process. Safety precautions are repeated throughout the text. Most useful with adult assistance, this attractive title is similar in format to Angela Wilkes's My First Nature Book (Knopf, 1990; o.p.), but many of the projects are more difficult.-Kathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn, OH Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
