Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Living things need energy. Plants make food from sunlight, and they are called producers. The animals and other creatures that eat plants are called consumers, and among them there may be a hierarchy. For example, the squirrel eats plants, and the fox eats the squirrel. However, the fox does not eat the bones or fur of the squirrel. Then, what happens after the fox's meal? Scavengers, detrivores and decomposers play their roles. The scavengers (e.g., hyenas, vultures) feast on the remains of a dead animal, but even they do not eat everything. The detrivores, part of nature's cleaners, may eat the parts of animals that the scavengers have left. Some may also eat dead plants. These creatures can be found on land and in the ocean. Decomposers are a different category of cleaner; the two main types are bacteria and fungi. The latter cannot be seen by the human eye. Information, beautiful full-color photographs, a glossary, and an index all help young readers learn about food chains and what each type of living thing does. There is a lot of information packed in this book, and it should whet readers' appetites to learn more about food chains. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
