Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
NIH studies show that as early as 2003, the obesity rate of children, ages 6—11, exceeded 20 percent. Knowing that many of these youngsters go home to empty houses where the television or a video game is the afternoon babysitter, it become even more important to use whatever time available to get kids outside. Involving children in nature activities has long been a favorite of parents because it is easy to do, it requires no particular skills or supplies, and it works as a stress reducer for the parent. This book is filled with activities, games, and crafts that will involve children out of doors. After the preliminary chapters explaining what, why, and where, the author divides the book into sections addressing each season and the nature activities that are pertinent to that particular time of the year. Spring includes Easter activities as well as making twig sculptures. Summer activities include, but are not limited to the things you can do at the seashore. Where adult supervision is needed, an inset box makes this point. The only negative in this book is that all of the photos are of Caucasian children. Appendices include an index, further reading, recommended websites, and safety information. This would be a useful tool for after school care and even preschool education. Elementary science teachers might also want to give it their attention.
