Overview

In the fifth Royal Spyness Mystery, Lady Georgiana Rannoch discovers that being a minor royal has its privileges when she visits the glamorous—and dangerous—French Riviera…

London, 1933
. Her Majesty the Queen is sending Georgie off to Nice with a secret assignment—to recover her priceless, stolen snuff box from the disreputable Sir Toby Groper. Her Majesty’s trust is an honor, but an even greater honor is bestowed upon Georgie in Nice when none other than Coco Chanel asks her to model the latest fashions.

Unfortunately, things go disastrously wrong on the catwalk and before Georgie can snatch the snuff box, someone’s life is snuffed out in a very dastardly way. With a murderer on the loose—and Georgie's beau Darcy seen in the company of another woman—how’s a girl to find any time to go to the casino?

"Georgiana makes a superb sleuth."
Jacqueline Winspear

“A feisty new heroine to delight a legion of Anglophile readers.”
-Romantic Times
"It's another delightful, unmissable installment in the Royal Spyness series. Bowen captures the cheeky humor and charm of the Lost Generation, ladling in a healthy dose of dry British wit and fundamental common sense."
-Booklist
"The best part of this delicious series is the cast of characters (well known and otherwise), led, of course, by the level-headed and stiff- upper-lipped Georgiana, who tackles whatever is in front of her, be it murder or romance, with uncommon relish. A royal romp."

In 1933 in spite of being 34th in the queue to the throne, Lady Georgiana Rannoch is impoverished. She works in a London soup kitchen where she can save money an get some free meals. The Queen temporarily saves her from more terrible tasting food by assigning her an all expense paid trip to the French Riviera. Her mission is to retrieve a snuff box stolen by nasty Sir Toby Groper. In France, while riding the rails, Rannoch meets the legend Coco Chanel, who shocks the pauper when she asks her to model a new line of clothing when they arrive in Nice. While doing her royal assignment and modeling for Coco Chanel, Georgina investigates whether her lover Darcy O'Mara is cheating on her. However, her efforts merge when she is caught in the middle of a homicide and the royal necklace is lifted. The latest endearing jocular Royal Spyness amateur sleuth (see Royal Blood) is a delightful Depression Era French Riviera romp. The heroine is a charmer as she fumbles and bungles her investigation while strutting on the catwalk. Coco Chanel adds to the fun as number 34 using the Queen's money (she hopes) acts Naughty in Nice. Harriet Klausner

Tough economic times are not new, and even folks related to the Queen (and King in this instance) sometimes have a hard time getting by. But, imagination, grit, manners and a good sense of humor work well, no matter what the circumstances.

Another engaging adventure with Georgina. Although the stakes are high the tension is understated wth this outing. I am looking forward to more in this series, although I could wish for more character development. Georgina seems much the same as she did when we first met her.

Georgie's brother and sister-in-law leaver her behind as they head off to the Riviera to escape the dreariness of London. When the Queen asks her to go there to find out who stole one of her prized snuffboxes, Georgie is ecstatic. It looks like she will be forced to avoid Fig's obnoxious brother-in-law and sleep in the library. Imagine her surprise when she finds her mother owns a villa there. Now, Georgie is living the high life. Until one of the Queen's necklaces is stolen while Georgie was wearing it and the man accused of stealing the snuffbox turns up dead. Georgie will have to investigate the death to keep herself out of jail.

The Royal Spyness series by Rhys Bowen features engaging, impoverished noblewoman Lady Georgiana Rannoch as heroine. In this installment, Georgie is ordered by her relative, the Queen, to recover a stolen snuffbox from Sir Toby Groper, a private collector currently residing in Nice. Excited for the change of scenery from dreary England, Georgie heads for the coast, meeting Coco Chanel along the way. And who other than Georgie’s own mother owns a villa overlooking Sir Toby’s residence? Georgie moves in, gets a fashion makeover, and proceeds to meet her new neighbor. She also meets a dashing marquis who distracts her from the elusive love of her life, Darcy O’Mara. Where Georgie goes, trouble inevitably follows, and soon she’s up to her boots in murder, deceit and secret identities. Already I’m impatient for the sequel. Highly recommended.

It’s January 1933, and impecunious Lady Georgiana Rannoch is saved from a dreary winter in a drafty castle in Scotland by a commission from the queen: to recover an antique snuffbox the queen believes was stolen by a wealthy member of the aristocracy who winters on the French Riviera. She’s got a place to say, but it’s nowhere near the sea, and it’s with her dreaded and dreadful sister-in-law and family. But soon, our heroine finds herself in a beautiful sea view home owned by none other than Georgie’s mother and with Coco Chanel as a house guest. Soon, however, the whole adventure turns ugly when the supposed snuff-box stealer is murdered and Georgie is taken into custody by an inept French cop. How is Georgie going to get the snuff-box back when she’d have to revisit the scene of the crime to do so? A modeling gig with the House of Chanel winds up with Georgie tripping (with the klutziness she warned Coco about), falling and somehow losing a hugely valuable necklace lent by the queen. And then she sees the love of her life, Darcy, with a woman and child she’s certain are his mistress and love child. What’s a girl to do? Rhys Bowen’s “her royal spyness” stories are madcap mysteries, always with just a dollop of romance, but not too much for those who like their mysteries “straight.” I count myself in that category. Georgie remains a great protagonist, sweet, somewhat naïve, but brave and fearless. She manages to get her beloved grandfather, a former London cop, to cross the pond for the first time when she lets him know she’s in trouble. A lot of trouble. Great entry in a favorite series.

This series is a classic in the making. Lady Georgianna and Darcy will become as beloved by Jane Austen fans as Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. They are extremely comfortable to be with! I love the sweetness and the feminine attributes of  Georgie, along with her determination to be herself. Great role model.
