Navidad Cubana

Barnes & Noble - Ed Morales
If you're looking to break the usual Christmas song compilation routine, this surprisingly engaging set of holiday classics al cubano is for you. Danilo Lozano, the founder of the Hollywood Bowl orchestra, leads an all-star cast of musicians called Cuba L.A. through typical fare such as "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Jingle Bells," and "Silent Night" with a goodly measure of hip-swinging allure. Although the melodies are prominent enough to make the album a good choice for a year-end fiesta, they ultimately end up as springboards for some scintillating Latin jazz jams. Lozano's flute playing lends a warm charanga feel to a cha-cha treatment of "Let It Snow" and a ...

Lozano's flute playing lends a warm charanga feel to a cha-cha treatment of "Let It Snow" and a stately danzón take on "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," while "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" becomes an up-tempo son montuno replete with frenetic trumpet solos. The set then shifts gears on slow-dancing boleros like "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and the meditative "Silent Night." And if you've ever heard John Coltrane's "Greensleeves," you'll surely be uplifted by Cuba L.A.'s version of "What Child Is This?" No doubt Navidad Cubana will spike your usual eggnog with plenty of Havana rum.
All Music Guide - Campbell
Cuba L.A. transmit Afro-Cuban fervor into the Christmas season on their first seasonal disc, Navidad Cubana. Led by flutist Danilo Lozano, Cuba L.A. combines chachacha, rumba, and comparsa into holiday standards including "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "I'll Be Home for Christmas," and "Jingle Bells." This disc is a real necessity for listeners with open ears, ready to break out of the typical holiday musical rut. It not only conjures up visions of snow and reindeer, but it provides some musical heat for seasonal diversity.
