This book isn't an attempt to be politically correct, but is dedicated to providing tools that readers can put to use when they encounter challenges when making their best efforts to navigate their way into, through and out of the maze that has become our healthcare system. Americans are concerned more about healthcare than the mortgage crisis, credit card debt, rising food prices, or losing money in the stock market. Now is the time to get educated, find out what the future might hold, and get active in the decision-making that surrounds your healthcare. With physicians making misdiagnoses between fifteen and twenty percent of the time, the examination room treadmill speeding up, and emergency rooms stressed out and overcrowded, here is a wakeup call that encourages the adoption of a more responsible, proactive, energetic, and consumer oriented attitude when it comes to personal and family health - before it is too late.

    Cracking the Maze

Americans are at risk each and every day as they attempt to maneuver their way through the health care system. Try going to an ER and getting prompt, courteous, and truly knowledgeable treatment -- or try getting someone to examine you for a "real" complaint, while you have to wait behind an endless lineup of people with coughs, colds, and non-emergency conditions. Go to most physician's offices and try not to be surprised that you've been booked at the same time as another patient -- just as the airlines often double-sell your seat. The horror stories that we're all aware of that have happened to family and friends aren't mere fantasies; they happen every day across this nation: misdiagnosis, infections picked up in hospitals and clinics, surgical errors, unnecessary deaths to name a few.

Thank God for this book. It isn't "Gone with the Wind," and it wasn't written to be. It is, however, a practical, nuts-and-bolts guide for any intelligent soon-to-be patient. Get it for your own edification. Buy it for a family member. Give it to a friend for the holidays. You spend lots on all kinds of insurance, why not invest a few dollars to insure your survival within the health care system.

There is a lot of solid information crammed into this book. Some will be put parts to memory; the rest will be read and re-read again and again. No matter what your level of education, there are things in this book that you don't know -- but can use. This should be in every library and made available for those who perhaps cannot afford to purchase their own copy. It is that valuable.

Help yourself. Help others. Get educated before you find yourself in situations that you could have successfully navigated -- if you had only read this book before hand.

    Excellent, Insightful...a MUST BUY!

Mr. Knott's has written a most comprehensive and helpful book offering down to earth and easy to understand information that one might need when dealing with hospitalization and/or general medical office visits or general preventive care. We, as basic individuals, believe that doctors in a sense are "gods" and that no possible wrong can happen when under their care. However, Mr. Knott points out that we as "consumers", have to become pro-active in our own healthcare by participating & engaging in conversation with our treating doctors, familiarize ourselves with our own general health and/or illness, and learning to ask "pro-active" question(s). Doctors ALONE are not just responsible here, we, as consumers (owning the rights to our own body) are equally responsible. As Mr. Knott so points out...we spent significant time "asking questions" and doing research when purchasing a car or home furnishings, but not spending any time asking questions prior to having surgery, nor in the taking of prescription drugs/and/or agreeing to serious "medical treatment" much less getting a second opinion. Having personally been involved in the medical industry, & having trained in a Level One Trauma Hospital, I can speak from experience that Mr. Knott's insight and ability to convey pertinent and significant information to the reader is right on target! He speaks from actual experience vs just providing information & stats accumulated from some medical journal. Young & old, healthy or ill, pick up Mr. Knott's book and know that it will help guide you thru this very difficult healthcare maze and everchanging system. The book will offer you much needed insight as to how to become pro-active in your "own care" and how to navigate thru this ever perplexing health care system. It's also strongly helps you establish communication skills when speaking with your medical doctor and/or surgeon. Don't wait until you get ill or are facing a life altering illness, read it NOW. Be the best friend you can be and purchase the book for a friend and/or family member. Become Pro-Active in your own health today. You can never be over-prepared when it comes to your own health, or your family's. Trust me, I've been there and speak from experience!

A different way of looking at the healthcare system.

Wow! That is what comes to mind on this gem. Completely refreshing to know someone out there gets it. Mr. Knott shows incredible insight page after page. This book has led to a paradigm shift in my thnking on our current healthcare system. I feel it wasn't just great advice, but an education in what to look for throughout his/her individual experiences. I truely hope everyone has a chance to read this book.

A SHOCKING WAKE UP CALL OF OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM-WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW TO SURVIVE

I am so pleased we got this book found on the bottom shelf in the store-the most important book we have read for our family and friends. We had not taken much notice of how to prepare for the doctor or hospital-but we woke up to the need for us to take our healthcare back in our hands, be much better prepared and follow the book's tips. I didn't realise that there were so many errors made in hospitals and that patients die from errors. Now we do, and we need to protect our family and friends.
This book should be right at eye level right inside the front door of the store-it is much too important to be on the bottom shelf.
A must read and a great Christmas gift to family and friends-a potential LIFE SAVER!!We will recommend this book to everyone we know.
