Dan Burke writes in a personal style that connected me to our shared experiences as converts. Navigating the Interior Life is a modern handbook that helps answer questions I had about spiritual direction: What is Spiritual Direction? Do I need Spiritual Direction? How do I find and select a Spiritual Director? I also liked that he discussed the responsibilities of both the Spiritual Director and those who want to receive direction. He later details the Three Ways of the spiritual life based on doctors of the Church, such as Thomas Aquinas, Teresa of Avila, and Catherine of Sienna. He compares the phases (from Aquinas) to childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The final chapters provide a path long-term plan to grow closer to God This is a great jumping off point into spiritual direction. I don't think it is a book that you read once. It's a guidebook to revisit throughout life.
