Ancient Egypt opens with prominent pharaohs and continues with life at home, within a palace, and amidst the construction of a pyramid. . . [and] quotes from notable authors and texts add to the browsing appeal of this book. [A] good first stop in the research process.

School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—The process of mummification, the pyramids, and the treasures of Tutankhamen are only a few of the aspects of ancient Egypt that continue to fascinate readers, young and old. This book provides an overview for general interest as well as for those seeking information for reports. Topics include geography, rulers, and daily life. Also provided is information on tomb raiders, trade, taxes, and war. Each chapter spread is filled with colorful illustrations, photographs, and maps. The chapter on the dynasties gives a clear explanation of the five eras of Egyptian history. An explanation of the types of crowns worn by the pharaohs is also included. Focus, however, is not solely on royalty. A chapter on the pyramid builders describes the lives of these workers. Descriptions of their villages, tools, and even their graffiti seem to transport readers to Giza. Children also learn about some of the powerful women of Egypt, including Hatschepsut and Cleopatra VII. The last spread depicts the end of the ancient Egyptian civilization and the beginning of the Ptolemaic rule. The text is strategically placed to provide information and explanations of the illustrations without overwhelming readers.—Lana Miles, Jackson Elementary School, Rosenberg, TX
