Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Written with elementary and middle-school teachers and librarians in mind, this useful guide is divided into two main parts; the first part charts holidays and celebrations by month with a list of suggested titles to use in curricula by grade level. The second part is much more substantive, offering specific titles and suggestions for activities for selected holidays by month. The authors have taken a great deal of care to suggest culturally sensitive materials and to offer two sets of suggestions for celebrating holidays that are religious in origin; one for religious celebrations and another for non-secular ones. In addition to book titles, media titles are also provided to enrich the classroom learning experience. Chapters near the end of the book list suggested activities for summer holidays and for those with moveable dates. There is also a section with suggestions for holidays in other parts of the world, useful for geography or social studies lessons. The final chapter contains suggestions for celebrating special occasions like birthdays. This book would be an excellent reference in elementary and middle school library collections and would make a nice companion to Chase's Calendar of Events. Recommended. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
School Library Journal
Access options abound in this hefty, comprehensive guide. Librarians can look up celebrations by month, season, country, or culture. They can explore familiar holidays such as Thanksgiving or learn about such lesser-known festivities as Itse Selu (the Cherokee Green Corn Festival). Both secular and religious celebrations are covered. The first section provides bibliographic information and suggested grade levels for titles on specific days. Sections that follow offer longer, more detailed explanations of the meaning and significance of a holiday and a helpful description of the content of each recommended book or media choice. "Explorations," or activities for sharing specific titles with students, are included; unfortunately, they are not particularly inspired. The few photographs and diagrams scattered throughout appear almost to be afterthoughts, as they do not particularly illuminate or add new information to the text. The four indexes (author, illustrator, title, and subject) are especially helpful. What the book lacks in style and imagination, it more than makes up for in information.-Sue Morgan, Tom Kitayama Elementary School, Union City, CA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
