Members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America choose the best of their genre literature. This collection, then, represents peer-nominated winners, which include an appreciation of grand master Philip Jos Farmer as well as six stories, or selections thereof. In addition, nine leading authors in the field comment on the future of SF/fantasy literature. A list of past Nebula Awards provides background in the genre. The current winners generally have a dark humor or philosophical "bent." "Daddy's World" plays on perspective, and is reminiscent of the recent film AI. The chapter from Darwin's Radio plays with the frightening consequences of societal and political interventions into reproduction. "Macs" suggests a thought-provoking way to deal with killings: artificially create people who serve as human sacrifices to atone for a killer's misdeeds. "Stellar Harvest" brings adventure filmmaking to a whole other dimension. "Goddesses" deals with a consultant who works in a third-world place to improve economic conditions, only to find how difficult it is to change the human condition itself. "A Night of Ghosts and Shadows" is a self-reflective treatment of prophetic writers. Several of these works carry the sense of being parts of larger efforts, so sometimes feel incomplete. Still, they provide an interesting look into today's approach to the genre, particularly according to the views of peer authors.
