Overview

The stakes get higher in #1 NYT bestselling author Anthony Horowitz's latest masterpiece.

As the fourth novel in the spellbinding Gatekeepers series begins, the world is under the greatest threat it's ever known. The evil corporation Nightrise has amassed an immense amount of power . . . and the devastating force of the Old Ones is about to be unleashed around the globe. To stop this from happening, Matt and three of the Gatekeepers head to Hong Kong--not just the modern city of skyscrapers and wealth, but the secretive underworld beneath. In Hong Kong they will meet the final Gatekeeper, a girl named Scarlet, whose fate is inextricably joined to their own....

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Book four of The Gatekeeper series finds the four teen-aged immortals we have met in the earlier books searching for the final addition to their group: a girl named Scarlet. Scarlet does not know anything about her past life but does recognize that she is different from those around her, especially after she is able to walk through a door in an old church and find herself walking into a different church in Russia. Chased by unscrupulous monks and denizens of the dark force rising to take control of the world, Scarlet begins to look for answers herself, and this eventually brings her to the awareness of her compatriots. But can they find each other before one of them is killed? Can they protect those who know their secret? And, ultimately, can they set up the tension that will, inevitably, take us into what is most likely the final book of the series? As with the other books in the series, this one has great adventure and exotic locales. Tweens will certainly continue to appreciate the daring of the teen characters in the series. Raven's Gate (The Gatekeepers Series #1) Evil Star (The Gatekeepers Series #2) Nightrise (The Gatekeepers Series #3). Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
VOYA
In Book 4 of the Gatekeepers series, readers meet Scarlett, the fifth and last of the Gatekeepers and the only girl. Scarlett was born in Indonesia but was adopted and has been living in England. At fifteen, she is just beginning to realize that there is something different about her, and she frequently has dreams about the other four Gatekeepers: Matt, Pedro, Scott, and Jamie. Scarlett's father works for the mysterious Nightrise Corporation, headquartered in Hong Kong. The city is being taken over by the Old Ones, and is covered in a sinister haze of pollution. When Scarlett is called to join her father there, Matt and Jamie head for Hong Kong to pull her out and to bring her to join the rest of the Gatekeepers. In the course of the book, readers learn a little more about the Old Ones and begin to understand what the final confrontation between the Gatekeepers and the Old Ones will be like. Although there are many action-filled sequences and Scarlett is an interesting new addition to the cast of characters, this book is clearly primarily a setup for the finale. Fans of the series will naturally want to read it and prepare themselves for the final great battle. Reviewer: Sarah Flowers

Meet the Author

Anthony Horowitz
Anthony Horowitz

Anthony Horowitz is the internationally bestselling author of the Alex Rider series which is now published in more than twenty countries with sales in the millions. He has also won several awards, including the Red House Book Award for Skeleton Key – voted for entirely by children.

Anthony knew he wanted to be a writer from the age of eight and after graduating from the University of York he was published for the first time when he was just 23. As well as writing books, he has created many successful television dramas including the BAFTA award-winning Foyle's War, Midsomer Murders and Poirot.

He is currently working on a major supernatural series, The Power of Five, which begins with Raven's Gate. It was inspired by a simple thought. “Would it be possible to write something like Lord of the Rings - but to set it here, now, in the real world?” Anthony explains. “Isn't it more exciting to imagine these great battles with all their magic and mystery happening in the very high street where you live, just out of the corner of your eye?”

Anthony Horowitz lives in North London with his wife and two sons. He writes in a small studio and is almost always accompanied by his trusty writing companion, a chocolate Labrador named Lucky Dog.

Intense next installment to the Gatekeepers series

I absolutely loved this book, from cover to cover i was sucked in! I didn't let anything distract me. Cellphone was off, computer was off and Horowitz had my complete attention...Then threw me right off the thrilling ride with an abrupt halt in the story. it ended so fast! It kind of took me a second to realize it was actually over, but there it was, the acknowledgments page. Though the knowledge that a fifth book of the series is already underway settled me, the ending just seemed to come too soon. Other than that, this book was excellent.

Necropolis-Thrilling Ride but a major dissapointment

Necropolis by anthony horowitz, made me keep on reading from 4pm-6pm, when i got this i ripped the box open and started reading after i got home from school. I took a few breaks to get something to eat but then continued reading it was great...a bunch of action, almost non stop. But at the very end i was just stunned, it just ended, with no explanation what happened to the gatekeepers or the old ones, i had to reread the last page like 20 times to really believe it was over, i was thought, "WHAT HOW CAN IT BE OVER?! WHAT HAPPENED!!!!!!!?????" so i was greatly dissapointed with horowitz, i consider him the greatest author of all time, but he just didnt come through for me this time, if this book was 150-200pages longer he couldve gave much more action and a final battle instead of "Oh, here's the end,and stuff happens to everyone, ok i'm done." I just wish i knew why this was called necropolis they mention it about 3 times, but dont give any reason why they want to make a certain city a necropolis. In my honest opinion, this was a thrilling, good, but a greatly dissapointing book, but EVERYONE should read it because its a good book, and this is one of my favorite all time series, and this is the finale i believe, so read the whole series(Raven's gate, evil star, nightrise,) then read necropolis, and look at horowitz's other books to, because he's the best!!!

Reviewed by Sally Kruger aka "Readingjunky" for TeensReadToo.com

The first strange event in the life of Scarlett Adams was the day she was rescued from certain death when she innocently stepped into the path of a speeding white van. She would have liked to thank the Chinese man who bravely swooped her out of harm's way, but he disappeared into the crowd.

Scarlett always knew she was adopted. Born in China, she was brought to England by Paul Adams and his wife. Her life was one of excess and privilege, but it was spent mostly with a live-in housekeeper and at her exclusive private school. Both her adoptive parents were busy with important careers, and when they announced they were divorcing, it was sad but not totally unexpected. Scarlett was content to continue attending her private school and living in the house with the housekeeper.

Another odd part of Scarlett's life was the dream she had on a fairly regular basis. Always set in a vast wasteland, it involved a familiar character named Matt. She always felt a strange connection with Matt and the feeling that they would one day meet.

Scarlett's world suddenly changes when she receives a message from her father requiring that she join him in Hong Kong. The message makes her suspicious the moment she reads it, and things become even more bizarre as she boards a plane for the other side of the world. She's met at the airport by people who tell her her father has been called away on important business, but they have been assigned to handle her care until he returns.

Readers of NECROPOLIS will immediately recognize that Scarlett is the fifth member of the Gatekeepers. Matt, Pedro, Scott, and Jamie are the other four talented teens whose duty is to save the world from destruction by The Old Ones. The five are the reincarnations of five who came before them and attempted to save the world in the past.

Anthony Horowitz uses his talent as an adventure writer to create the breathtaking world of monsters and shape-changers bent on the death and destruction of humankind. THE GATEKEEPERS adventures will satisfy even the most hard-to-please readers with bloody battles, last-minute getaways, massive insect swarms, and one double-cross after another.

Readers will now have to anxiously await Book #5 to find out how the adventure is to continue.

    perfect

I absolutely loved the ending, it was a clever twist to the series. The story was great, but may I also say frustrating? Throughout the entire book there were many chance encounters that were cut short by a few seconds and then when you think nothing else can happen Horowitz throws another hurdle into the track. Well-written series. likable characters, this author has one expanded imagination.

Necropolis, city of the dead. The book starts following Scarlett

Necropolis, city of the dead. The book starts following Scarlett Adams. A chinese girl who lives with her foster parents in London. In the first few chapters alone, Scarlett's life is nearly cut off. But she is saved by strangers, who disappear with no explanation. After a school field trip to an old church that leads her to be imprisoned in Ukraine, Scarlett learns she isn't a normal person. She is one of the five.

Meanwhile, Matt, Pedro, as well as the recently joined Scott and Jamie bide their time. They are in Nazca, Peru pondering the situation. They have seen the news about Scarlett, they know she is one of the five. The final piece of the puzzle. The only problem is that the Old Ones, the evil force trying to take over the world, know it too. Matt and Jamie, along with Richard who is Matt's guardian, set off to London to find Scarlett while Scott and Pedro go to Vilcabamba, a hidden Incan city to rest. Unfortunately, Jamie and Matt are a few hours too late. Scarlett has already flown out of the country to Hong Kong, to be with her father. Little does Scarlett know that her father works for the Old Ones, at the Nightrise corporation.

In Hong Kong, Scarlett is followed and spied on by the Old Ones, before she is rescued by Chinese agents and taken to a warehouse to hide. Suddenly, the warehouse is attacked by shape-changers, and this is how Scarlett finds that the necklace, given to her by the chairman of Nightrise was in fact a tracker. Scarlett attempts several times to escape Hong Kong, meanwhile, the other gatekeepers are trying to get to her without attracting attention from the Old Ones. The question is: can the five meet, or will the Old Ones capture them, allowing them to rule the world?

    a horowitz maserpiece

the fourth book in the gatekeepers series, horowitz pulls out all the stops for this one. a good read, keeps you guessing until the end, and still leaves questions unanswered, undoubtedly, to be answered in the next, and probably last book of the series. lots of action, suspense, twists, and the introduction of the last gatekeeper as she tries to figure out her power keeps you on your feet till the open-ended conclusion. There were some confusing elements to it though, that you will probably find as you read. despite them though, I highly reccomend this book to the fans of horowitz and the series.
