Ned Rorem: Selected Songs

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Ned Rorem's songs got a big and much-deserved boost from Susan Graham's magnificent Erato recording released in 2001. Here, another of the composer's favorite singers, Carole Farley, brings us another song collection, this time with the composer himself at the piano. It must be said upfront that Farley is no longer in her vocal prime, and the upper register of her voice sometimes wavers under pressure. Graham's voice is in peak form, of course, and her disc is probably the ideal Rorem primer. But Farley's recital provides plenty of pleasure, too, as the American soprano clearly has a great love for Rorem's music as well as a deep understanding for the marvelous poetry he sets. And comparisons between Graham's and Farley's interpretations are instructive. Farley, for example, narrates the charmingly nostalgic "Early in the Morning" with a wide-eyed sense of joy; Graham makes it into a misty reverie. Rorem is the perfect accompanist, allowing Farley to take center stage while providing so much detail and color in his playing that one's ear cannot help but be swayed. Considering the low price of this Naxos disc, it is recommended without reservation. But do get Graham's recording, too; the two are very complementary.
