Overview

A wonderful new store has opened in the little town of Castle Rock, Maine. Whatever your heart's secret desire, it's for sale. And even though every item has a nerve-shattering price, the owner is always ready to make bargains...

Leland Gaunt is a stranger in Castle Rock--and he calls his new shop Needful Things, where there is something for everyone. Mr. Gaunt takes pleasure in seeing how much people will pay for their most secret dreams and desires, and he knows that almost everything is for sale: love, hope, even the human soul.

Editorial Reviews

AudioFile
“[King’s] . . . narration style lends intimacy to the recording, as if King were sitting down with you himself.”
AudioFile
Publishers Weekly
With the ``Last Castle Rock Story'' King bids a magnificent farewell to the fictional Maine town where much of his previous work has been set. Of grand proportion, the novel ranks with King's best, in both plot and characterization. A new store, Needful Things, opens in town, and its proprietor, Leland Gaunt, offers seemingly unbeatable (read: Faustian) bargains to Castle Rock's troubled citizens. Among them are Polly Chalmers, lonely seamstress whose arthritis is only one of the physical and psychic pains she must bear; Brian Rusk, the 11-year-old boy whose mother is not precisely attentive; and Alan Pangborn, the new sheriff whose wife and son have recently died. These are only three of the half-dozen or so brilliantly drawn people met in the novel's one-month time span. As the dreams of each strikingly memorable character, major and minor, inexorably turn to nightmare, individuals and soon the community are overwhelmed, while the precise nature of Gaunt's evil thrillingly stays just out of focus. King, like Leland Gaunt, knows just what his customers want.
Cleveland Plain Dealer
King's best...fast-paced, well-constructed...cleverly plotted.
Kirkus Reviews
The old horrormaster in top form, this time with a demonic dealer in magic and spells selling his wares to the folks of Castle Rock, scene of several King novels including The Dead Zone, Cujo—and how many others? King locates his hokey Our Town in Maine, but as ever it's really Consumerville, USA, with everyone's life festooned with brand names. The cast is huge and largely grotesque, since King—wearing a tremendous cat's-smile—means to close the book on Castle Rock and blow it off the map in one of his best climaxes since Salem's Lot. Editing here is supreme. King braids perhaps a dozen storylines—with hardly a drop of blood spilled for the first 250 or so pages—into ever briefer takes that climax in a hurtling, storm-ripped holocaust whose symphonic energies fill the novel's last third. Perhaps only five characters stand out: Leland Gaunt, a gentlemanly stranger who opens the Needful Things curiosity shop; his first customer, Brian Rusk, 11, who sells his soul for a rare Sandy Koufax baseball card; practical Polly Chalmers, who runs the You Sew `n' Sew shop, welcomes Gaunt with a devil's-food cake, and buys an amulet to relieve her arthritis; her lover, Sheriff Alan Pangborn, who buys nothing but is haunted by the driving deaths of his wife and son; and Ace Merrill, coke dealer in a bind, who becomes Gaunt's handydevil and gets to drive Gaunt's Tucker, a car that's faster than radar and uses no gas. As he has for hundreds of years, Gaunt sells citizens whatever pricks and satisfies their inmost desires. But the price dehumanizes them, and soon all the townsfolk vent their barest aggressions on each other with cleaver, knife, andgun: Gaunt even opens a sideline of automatic weapons. By novel's end, the whole town is on a hysterical, psychotic mass rampage that floods morgue and hospital with the delimbed and obliterated. Then comes the big bang. Mmmmmmmmmmmm! Leland King's glee, or Steven Gaunt's, or rather—well, the author's—as he rubs his palms over his let's-blow-'em-away superclimax is wonderfully catching.

Meet the Author

Stephen King
Stephen King

Stephen King, the world's bestselling novelist, was educated at the University of Maine at Orono. He lives with his wife, the novelist Tabitha King, and their children in Bangor, Maine.

Biography

Fiction powerhouse Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine, in 1947. As a student at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, became active in political causes, and met his wife, the former Tabitha Spruce. In the early years of his marriage, King augmented his meager teacher's salary by selling short stories to men's magazines. Then, in 1973 he hit pay dirt: his novel Carrie was accepted for publication, and a major paperback deal provided the means for him to leave teaching and concentrate full-time on writing. Since then, the prolific author has never looked back.

Dubbed the Master of the Macabre for his domination of the horror genre, King has also written bestselling thrillers, mysteries, fantasies, novellas, and short stories, many of which have been turned into blockbuster films and miniseries (A partial list includes Carrie, The Shining, The Stand,, Misery, It, The Shawshank Redemption, The Langoliers, Stand by Me, and The Green Mile). He also has two works of nonfiction to his credit: a gorgeously crafted memoir/scribbler's how-to (On Writing) and Faithful, a chronicle of the Boston Red Sox' stellar 2004 season, cowritten with Stewart O'Nan. In 2003, he received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

In between books, the indefatigable King performs in the Rock Bottom Remainders, a rock band that includes among its rotating personnel fellow authors Dave Barry and Amy Tan; attends as many Boston Red Sox games as is humanly possible; and contributes with his wife, Tabitha, to many local and national charities.

Good To Know

Don't believe everything you read about Stephen King. Among the gossip circulating about the scribe is the rumor that he is going blind. King assures his fans that while he is genetically predisposed to a disease called macular degeneration, which could result in blindness, he is not actually going blind.

King is probably one of the most easily recognizable authors alive, and it's not just because of his string of bestsellers. King has appeared in a number of films based on his work, including Pet Semetary, Thinner, and The Stand.

If you've ever wondered why Stephen King has written several books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, there is actually a very simple explanation: King is so prolific that he felt it necessary to create an alter-ego so that he could publish more than one book a year. The name was a hastily hobbled together combination of writer Richard Stark (ironically, a pseudonym for Donald Westlake) and Randy Bachman of rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

King knocks it right out of the park!

This is really a spectacular piece of work. Its not like his typical classics such as misery, it, the shining, or cujo but it has this sense of unusualness that makes this novel special i highly reccommend this novel to anyone who likes Stephen King reads and wants to travel down a fun little side path.

    Pretty Good

This is the only Stephen King book that I really enjoyed. I think the story-line is good, especially the way all the separate elements get woven together.

A book that leaves you speechless!

In this horrifying, yet thrilling novel, Stephen King gives a whole new meaning to the word evil. In small town Castle Rock, Maine, past and present fears are unleashed. This compelling story mixes the everyday drama and gossip of the small town life, with the magic and evil of what people consider ¿the unknown.¿ When newcomer Leland Gaunt arrives in town, and opens what the towns-people consider a suspicious store called Needful Things, people¿s attitudes begin to change. When eleven-year-old Brian Rusk decides to make his way into the store, he begins to think about what his mom would say to him if she found out. At first he is hesitant, but when he decides that maybe the store isn¿t so bad, he discovers that he has found what he has been searching for. Leland Gaunt has his way of wheeling and dealing, and at that moment Brain Rusk signs his soul to the devil, for one particular baseball card and doesn¿t even realize it. Polly Chalmers, a middle-aged woman with arthritis who runs the You Sew `n¿ Sew shop, decides to welcome the newcomer with a sinfully delicious cake. Little does she know the gift he is about to give her is sinful in its own way as well. She buys an amulet to relieve her arthritis and, like little Brian Rusk, she too sells her soul for something so small without realizing it. I honestly believe that this is the most exciting book I have read in a very long time. It definitely kept me wanting more. I would say this is an absolute must read. It is the type of book you never want to end.

    Off the chain

I knew this book was going to be great when I first got it. But I didn't know how good. I just found out that this was off the chain. And Leland Gaunt truely was the demon of all demons. He knew how to make a deal and he also knew how to manipulate you. This is a must read.

Do you want it or NEED it?

One of my personal King favorites. We all have them...those things we can't live without...but at what cost? Enjoy the ride as this master of the macabre takes us on a journey which makes us question how much is too much?

Not so scary as weird & creepy

Very interesting plot line. King very artfully pulls you in
to the story but you have to put it down & digest what's going on
    before proceeding.

A must read for the Stephen King fan...pulls you inside the book

This book grabbed me from the start. I couldn't put the book down once I started reading. The descriptive detail makes the reader feel like he/she is in the book itself. For those who have seen the movie, the book has much, much more......

    Great Read!

Although this book may seem a little long, it is definitely worth the read! This book really brings out the dark side of Castle Rock. This book is about giving up our souls in order to fill some deep deep desire.

    A Great Book

To me, this story is about the devil, temptation, and corruption. An evil proprietor comes to an average small town and opens up a shop that sells your heart's desire, but for a ridiculous price that has nothing to do with money. It basically demonstrates how easily people will choose to do the wrong thing in exchange for something they want. It's a lot like the idea of someone selling their soul to the devil. In this book, there are some characters from other King books that resurface, so it might benefit a reader to check out other King books first so these characters will make more sense. I recommend reading Cujo and The Body (a shost story) first.

    I Also Recommend:

    It Haunted Me

This is among the best horror books (or Stephen King) books I ever read. I think that's partly the portrait of a town and that many of the characters are one you can easily care about. Their corruption, the temptations are understandable--not just a wish for power or riches or a prized possession--but the surcease of pain, the promise of a normal life as a temptation and road to perdition. King takes the quintessential Norman Rockwell American small town and through this shop that sells "Needful Things" begins to tear the fabric of its members and the relationships between them and coming to a climax I'm not going to forget for a long time.

    All Been Done Before...

Many years ago, Richard Matheson wrote a short story entitled 'The Distributor', which tells of a sinister stranger who arrives in an unsuspecting, naively trusting neighbourhood and causes all manner of mayhem. That story tells you everything 'Needful Things' does, without the unnecessary supernatural element. Oh yeah, and the novel's too long, but the ending's too short.

    A delicacy

Like a good wine, Needful Things is a read most enjoyed every few years. The story boasts interesting and well-developed characters, an excellent storyline and a seamless flow that comes to an end all too quickly. Stephen King is the master, and it's going to be a sad day when he is called to whatever dreams there are.

A tale to make you mistrust the neighbors

I enjoyed this book a lot. It's the perfect story about small town life turned inside out. It was detailed, and in-depth to each character's life. Leland Gaunt was the master of manipulation. I'd tell every horror reader that this is a must-read.

    not the best written

this book was long and drawn out. I am a Stephen King fan, but this is the worst book he has written. It was boring and predictable. I only finished just to finish. if you are having trouble sleeping this is the perfect book to read.

    a long, long read...

the book's a bit thick and so i took around 1 week to finish it. it was interesting for the first 300+ pages but after that, the progression of the story u can even guess it yourself w/o finishing it. there's not much twists in the story and i finished the book more for the sake of finishing it rather than wanting to know the ending. the many characters in the story reminds me of his other book, 'Salem Lot. but if you are a true stephen king's fan, you will still wanna read it.
