Overview

Estonia's Neeme Järvi has been a prolific recording artist and a well-loved conductor in many countries, including the U.S. He has amassed a large body of recordings on several labels, so it's hard to capture the breadth of his legacy on a single compilation. Still, this one from Chandos is a strong consideration. It's a bit light on Järvi's championing of music from his native Estonia, although it does include a sample of the attractive and otherwise obscure "Five Pieces" of Heino Eller. And there's a complete lack of probably Järvi's greatest specialty, the music of Jean Sibelius. Instead you get works by the moderately interesting Johan Halvorsen and Johann Severin Svendsen (not by Jacob Gade, another true Järvi specialty). You get distinct compensations for these lacunae, however. One is a good look at the later part of Järvi's American career, in Detroit, where he showed an admirable ability to immerse himself in a new situation in comparatively old age. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra recordings of works by Barber, Duke Ellington, and William Grant Still (the latter two not composers you would immediately associate with Järvi, but hear the results) are all quite strong. Elsewhere there's a good selection of music from the late 19th century, which has always made up the bulk of Järvi's symphonic programs, performed by some of the many orchestras (the Scottish National Orchestra most often) with which this journeyman conductor has been associated. If you don't hear a few bars of music and say "That's Neeme Järvi" as you might with Solti or Szell, you nevertheless get a taste of one of the late 20th century's most durable and influential musical careers. The Chandos remastering is more than adequate considering both the temporal and the spatial variety of the recordings involved.
