Overview

As the feisty frontwoman of North Carolina's popular old-timey revivalists the Freight Hoppers, Cary Fridley was akin to a force of nature. Her shrill yelp and heavily strummed guitar propelled breakneck renditions of traditional mountain favorites like a locomotive engine. For her self-released solo debut, Fridley has changed up her musical approach. Her renderings of songs first made popular (at least regionally and among hardcore fans) by the likes of the Carter Family and Frank Proffitt sound downright reserved and less kinetic and chaotic than her work with her previous band. On Neighbor Girl Fridley's voice is more expressive than ever, too, a more finely tuned instrument. She sounds as if she was born to sing of the troubles and simple joys that define old-timey mountain music.
