Children's Literature - Heidi GreenBased on Nellie Mooney's (later McClung) autobiography, this is the inspiring tale of a Canadian feminist, activist and novelist. Growing up in the 1880s, the strong-willed, energetic Nellie quickly learned that being female was very different from being male and she was angry at the differences. Crook shows us Nellie at the age of 10 as she recognizes the injustice of society's bias, at 16 as a young schoolteacher struggling against it, and at 17 when she decides to focus her struggle to make others aware. The book includes the author's explanation of the changes she made in fictionalizing McClung's story as well as notes regarding the original source(s).
Nellie L is published by Fitzhenry and Whiteside.
