From The Critics
Reviewer: Daniel R. Bronfin, M.D.(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This 5th edition textbook is an abbreviated version of the classic Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics and is written in a traditional style with modern formatting and online references. It has been significantly updated since the 2002, 4th edition.
Purpose: The authors strive to present new discoveries as well as classic pediatric knowledge in a readable, concise format. This book accomplishes this through well organized chapters featuring many more tables, diagrams and illustrations compared to previous editions.
Audience: This book is specifically targeted to medical students and pediatric house staff. Many of the chapters are written by pediatric clerkship directors familiar with the core curriculum and the requirements for in-service examinations.
Features: Following an introduction to the field of Pediatrics, this book is organized into subspecialty chapters in a very traditional format. The chapters are designed in a concise and quite readable fashion with the time constraints of students and residents in mind.
Assessment: This book may be intimidating to students in that it is over 900 pages long and it reads like a reference book rather than other books in this genre that can be read easily from cover to cover. Nevertheless, it represents the standard in the field and is probably favored by most teachers for their student's education.
