Gr 8 Up-- This biography opens with an absorbing description of Mandela's release from prison in 1990; the next chapter briefly recounts South Africa's history up to the decade in which he was born and his boyhood until he leaves the reserve for Johannesburg. The remaining nine chapters discuss his growing political leadership, long imprisonment, and activities since his release. Occasional black-and-white photos punctuate the text. Although the general organization is chronological, some key events, such as the founding of the African National Congress (ANC) and the Land Act of 1913, appear in confusing sequence. There is too little explanation of the depth of the country's history of racism. Also, in describing Mandela's choices and leadership, Otfinoski offers too little discussion of other traditions of resistence among black South Africans. Use of such abstract terms as ``radical,'' ``moderate,'' and ``factional fighting'' conveys nothing about the different visions of freedom that affected Mandela and that continue to influence this country's future. Otfinoski is respectful of Winnie Mandela's talents, and restrained but straightforward in his treatment of her troubles over Stompie Seipei's murder. Her husband's stature emerges despite the book's limitations, but the Hooblers' Mandela (Watts, 1992) provides a better understanding of the man, his society, and his role in its politics. --Loretta Kreider Andrews, Enoch Pratt Free Lib . , Baltimore
