Neoclassical Architecture in Greece

Overview

This volume provides an in-depth examination of ... the development and establishment of a Greek neo-classical style following the end of Ottoman rule through the early decades of the 20th century. The appeal of Enlightenment ideas and architectural styles and the incorporation of these western influences into a local style are the topics of early chapters. The volume then provides a thorough survey of neo-classical buildings throughout the region. Architectural historians will find this volume, which is heavily illustrated with color plates of the architecture and many historic views, an impressive addition to the literature. In addition to Athens, many cities and towns throughout Greece followed the same architectural trend, expressed in the form of either Neoclassicism or late historicism. The urban landscape that emerged in Greece through the early twentieth century includes buildings that are remarkable both architecturally and artistically. Today, they attract an intense and growing interest.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Once Greek territories were no longer part of the Ottoman Empire, Greek Revival architecture fiercely took hold throughout Great Britain, northern Germany, and much of the United States from the early 1800s on, and its strength derived chiefly from associations with national identity and democracy. Rarely do architectural historians explore the presence of the Greek Revival on Greek soil, however; nor do they consider the effect of the broader arc of Neoclassicism on the urban landscape of modern Greece. Kardamitsi-Adami and Biris (both architecture, National Technical Univ. of Athens) perform that service, beginning with an analysis of the grammar of Classicism before moving to its permutations in some of the more eccentric examples of architecture in late 19th- and early 20th-century Greece. Also central is the application of Classicism to urban design, and here the authors ably interweave social and architectural history. Building descriptions are clear, concise, and sufficient in detail, although illustration captions lack dates of construction. While the photographs alone describe the buildings stunningly in their Aegean sunlight, the translation is often awkward and pedantic. Recommended for highly specialized architectural history collections only.-Paul Glassman, Hofstra Univ. Lib., Hempstead, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
