Overview

A.D. 2015: Since arriving in the super-technological city of Tokyo-3, 14-year-old Shinji Ikari has made a cold reunion with his estranged father Gendo, head of the classified United Nations agency, NERV -- recruited by him into piloting NERV's top-secret weapon, "Evangelion" against the mysterious invaders code-named "Angels." NERV's tall, dark and handsome agent Ryoji Kaji has presented Gendo with a very special cargo: a tiny, embryonic object code-named "Adam" -- the first human being. Any hope of a reconciliation is cut short in a chilling encounter at the site of the empty grave of Yui Ikari, Shinji's vanished mother, where Gendo tells Shinji he is old enough not to need parents. Meanwhile, it has become clear to NERV's senior officers that Kaji is actually a double agent also working for the Japanese Ministry of the Interior. After the spy reveals to both Shinji and his commanding officer Misato the sub-basement hangar where NERV is keeping the now monstrously-grown (yet incomplete) Adam, Kaji tells Shinji privately that Gendo and NERV's erstwhile masters, the obscure society Seele, have had long foreknowledge of events through hermetic prophecies from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Kaji prompts Shinji to remember that as a small boy, he witnessed his mother's horrific disappearance during the creation of the first Eva Unit -- her invention, not Gendo's...What was her "Adam Project," and why, on Gendo's orders, has Shinji's fellow pilot Rei just thrust the gargantuan relic known as the "Spear of Longinus" into Adam's crucified form, its face covered by the sigil of Seele?

Shinji's breaking point has now come: during the startup test of Eva Unit-03, piloted by his best friend Toji, it becomes apparent that the Eva has been infected by the parasitical Eighth Angel. When Shinji hesitates to strike, his father activates Unit-01's top secret "Dummy System," a bioencoding program developed under his orders that provides an artificial synchronization with the Eva...and overrides any human pilot. Or humanity -- as Shinji watches helplessly, the "Dummy System" uses Unit-01 to savagely beat the Eighth Angel, together with his friend trapped inside, to death... One of the founding members of Gainax, Japan's most progressive anime studio, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was also the character designer for their new, much buzzed-about OAV series FLCL, their film, Royal Space Force, and their hit television show Nadia. Neon Genesis Evangelion is Sadamoto's first full-length manga work.

    Wow Wow Wow!

This series has taken a completely unexpected turn. This(along with volume 6) is definently my favorite volumes in this series. This is, without a doubt, an amazing series. The series just continues to progress. The characters mature and the story is really blossoming. There is so much biblical themes in this series, which surprised me seeing as it comes from Japan. This is one series you don't want to miss.
