Editorial Reviews
Journal of the American Medical Association
...a well-written and comprehensive textbook, which I would highly recommend to neonatologists at all levels. It is an excellent standard reference.Jatinder Bhatia
A wide range of neonatal topics are covered in this book in considerable depth, including issues impacting the modern day practitioner and advances in the field. First published in 1960, this edition is updated from the 1994 version. This book ""...helps in the broad understanding of the biology of the human neonate and the care of neonatal diseases and conditions..."" This is a welcome resource for practitioners in the field. The book has been expanded considerably as stated and the objectives are met. The audience is neonatology fellows in training and neonatologists in practice. In actuality, this book will serve as a good resource to most practitioners in neonatal care including residents and neonatal nurse practitioners. The principal editor and his colleagues are respected members of the neonatal community and in their own right have made major contributions to the literature. A wide range of subjects are covered in this book, from delivery room management to molecular techniques. Issues of manpower, regionalization, and transport are handled as well as specific neonatal diseases. The book has an easy-to-read style with appropriate flow charts and tables. This is not a cookbook, rather a treatise on diseases and problems in neonatal care. A lot of information is packed in the appendixes with useful references and reference charts. There are a small number of textbooks in neonatology, each with its unique style and presentation (i.e., Spitzer's Intensive Care of the Fetus and Neonate (Mosby, 1996); Fanaroff and Martin's Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Diseases of the Fetus and Infant (Mosby, 1997)). This book compares well to others in this field. The material is presented in anobjective manner with current references and is expanded from previous versions by including new chapters and expanding on older ones. Replacing the previous edition is justified simply for the reason that it is more current and more specifically targeted for the material presented.Ed Ogata
This is the fourth edition of one of the ""standard"" clinical textbooks in neonatology. The purpose is to present clinical problems based on known pathophysiology. This is a noteworthy objective. The book meets the authors' objectives. The book is for those who provide care for or have working knowledge of the problems of a neonate. Thus, it is most appropriate for neonatologists and those training in neonatology. Residents in pediatrics will also gain much from this book. The book is well illustrated. The currency and pertinence of the references are excellent. The table of contents is adequate, and the overall appearance of the book is handsome. This is an outstanding, current, and detailed book. It is an excellent compendium of basic and clinical material. This edition, with its added sections, offers quite a bit of new information as compared with the previous edition.Booknews
Fifty-nine chapters by multiple authors or groups of authors discuss general considerations for contemporary practitioners of neonatology, as well as fetal diagnosis and therapy, transition and stabilization, the low-birth-weight infant, a broad range of pathologies in the newborn infant, pharmacology, and post-discharge care and development. Also includes many informative graphs and tables as appendices. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)From The Critics
